History  Back to top

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery of the Manila Doctors Hospital (MDH) was founded in 1956, the same year that the hospital started its operations. It was established at the onset as a separate department unlike other institutions where the Department of ENT (Ear-Nose-Throat) usually evolved from a Department of EENT (Eyes-Ear-Nose-Throat). An interesting historical sidelight is that it was also during this time that the final draft of the constitutions and by laws of the future Philippine Society of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery was completed. The founding chairman of the department was Dr. Tierry M. Garcia (1956- 1971), followed by Dr. Carlos R. Sevilla (1972- 1978), Dr. Armando T. Chiong, Sr. (1979- 1992) and Dr. Generoso T. Abes (1992- 2000) and Dr. Alfredo Q.Y Pontejos, Jr. (2000 – 2006). The present chairman is Dr. Cesar V. Villafuente Jr.

The Department has always prided itself in having a complete staff in terms of sub-specialty and being well-equipped per specialty. It started its residency training program in January of 1993 and gained accreditation for four years in 1999. In 2000, accreditation was again granted for another four (4) years.

From then on, there was no stopping for MDH-ENT. From its humble beginnings, the department now prides itself as having a competent consultant and resident staff. It is one of the training hospitals well equipped in the field of Neuro-Otology and Laryngology and the first to integrate hearing aid fitting and evaluation in its residency training program.

The MDH-ENT has established a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Pasay City General Hospital (PCGH) since February 15, 1999 wherein residents go on regular rotations thus increasing the residents’ exposure and training. Last February 2003, the department signed a new MOA with Don Mariano Marcos Memorial Medical Center (DMMMMC) in Batac, Ilocos Norte with senior residents (4th year) performing cases in Head and Neck and Maxillofacial surgeries and at the same time allowing DMMMMC residents to rotate in the MDH-ENT department especially in the Otology and Neuro-otology subsections. These MOAs serve to augment the number of cases seen and done by the residents.

In 2003, the department, in cooperation with the Metrobank Foundation, Incorporated and the hospital administration, started its yearly in-house surgical mission on cleft lip and palate. It was participated in by the resident staff, supervised by the active and courtesy consultants.

At present, with the availability of the equipments and staff, the department has become a good venue for training well rounded and competent Otorhinololaryngologist. Thus, it fulfills the vision to be a center of excellence in the field of our specialty.

MISSION

The Manila Doctors Hospital Department of Otorhinolaryngology is a service-oriented training and research center providing compassionate comprehensive and excellent Otorhinolaryngological care for those in need.

VISION

We, the Manila Doctors Hospital Department of otorhinolaryngology aspire to be the leading center of excellence in the field of our specialty.
